Your wedding photographs are a lasting memory of your big day that you’ll view for decades to come so it is important you select a photographer who can provide the images you want. Not every photographer is the same so you should do your research prior to booking. To help you with the selection process, we’ve listed five questions you should ask potential wedding photographers.
1. Are you familiar with our venue?
Photographers who have experience at your venue are more likely to know the best places to snap the perfect shot. If your photographer is not familiar with your venue, ask if he or she is willing to conduct a walkthrough prior to the event to garner some ideas.
2. What is your style?
You can learn a lot about the photographer from this question. Does her or she specialize in posed shots or prefer candids? What is his or her approach to taking photos during intimate moments, such as the ceremony, while remaining unobtrusive? It is also important to ask for sample photos. This can show you the type of pictures you’ll receive if you decide to book the photographer for your special day.
3. Can I request certain photos?
If you have specific shots in mind already, ask the photographer if he or she is open to taking them. This is especially important if your request is outside the norm, i.e., you want to use colored smoke bombs or animals. Also ask if you can provide examples, whether it be from a family or friend’s wedding or a site like Pinterest, to help guide your vision.
4. How will I receive my photos?
Some photographers provide a link to your pictures, while others ask you to come in and view them at their studio. Also confirm exactly what you will receive with your package and what add-ons are available, i.e. parent albums, additional prints, etc. Ask how soon after the wedding you can expect to receive the photos, as well.
5. Who will be my photographer? What is the emergency plan if he or she cannot attend?
It is important to ask just who your photographer will be so you can view samples of his or her work. Also, make sure there is a contingency plan if he or she cannot make it that day.
